Feeling Overwhelmed by Wedding Planning? Here’s How to Make It Easier

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by wedding planning, break tasks into manageable steps, use a wedding planner and checklist, ask for help and make time to enjoy being engaged.

You’ve said “YES!”, you’ve started planning your big day, and at first, it was all so exciting. But somewhere between researching venues, chasing suppliers, managing your budget, choosing your wedding dress and organising your bridal party, has it all started to feel a little… overwhelming?

If your wedding to-do list seems to be growing by the day, you’re struggling to know what to tackle next, or you feel as though you’re constantly thinking about the wedding, you’re not alone.

Wedding planning should be an exciting chapter of your life, but that doesn’t mean it always feels easy. When you’re juggling work, family, everyday life and a wedding to organise, it’s completely understandable to feel stressed.

I’m May, founder of My Wedding Shop, and my mission is to help overwhelmed Irish brides feel calm, organised and excited from “yes” to “I do”.

So, grab yourself a cuppa, take a breath and let’s look at some simple ways to make wedding planning feel more manageable — without feeling as though you have to do everything at once.

Why Does Wedding Planning Feel So Overwhelming?

When you’re newly engaged, it’s tempting to jump straight into looking at dresses, flowers, colour schemes and all those beautiful wedding details. But before you get carried away with the Pinterest boards, start with the big picture.

Here are three things I’d recommend doing first:

  • Talk about your priorities. What matters most to you both? Is it the venue, the food, the atmosphere, the photographs or having all your favourite people together?
  • Set a realistic budget. Agree on what you can comfortably spend and discuss who, if anyone, will be contributing.
  • Think about your guest list. You don’t need a final list immediately, but having a rough idea of numbers will help when researching venues and suppliers.

You don’t need to book everything in one weekend. Start with these foundations, and you’ll have a clearer idea of what comes next.

How to Get Organised When You Have a Million Things to Do

One of the biggest challenges for a bride-to-be is keeping track of everything. Between venue appointments, supplier quotes, dress fittings, guest lists, payments and deadlines, there’s an awful lot to remember!

It’s easy to feel as though you should be doing something every minute of the day.

My advice? Give all those wedding plans one home.

A dedicated wedding planner and checklist can help you organise your tasks, record important details, keep track of deadlines and see what you’ve already accomplished.

This is exactly why I created My Wedding Planner. I wanted to make wedding planning feel more manageable, with everything you need to do before you say “I do” gathered in one place.

Rather than trying to remember everything or searching through endless notes on your phone, you can work through your plans step by step.

And remember, you don’t need to complete every task at once. Focus on what needs your attention now, then move on to the next thing.

May’s Wedding Tip: At the start of each week, choose three wedding tasks you’d like to tackle. You’ll have a clear focus without feeling as though your entire wedding needs to be organised by Friday!

4. Simple Ways to Reduce Wedding Planning Stress

Let’s be honest: wedding planning can sometimes feel like a second job, especially when you’re juggling work, family, friends and everyday life.

Here are a few simple ways to make it feel less stressful.

1. Break big tasks into smaller steps

Instead of writing “sort the wedding flowers” on your to-do list, break it down into manageable actions: research florists, gather inspiration, request quotes and arrange consultations.

Small steps feel much easier to tackle than one enormous task.

2. Give yourself permission to take a break

You don’t need to talk about your wedding, research suppliers or tick something off your checklist every day. It’s perfectly fine to have an evening when you put your plans aside and enjoy a film, meet a friend or simply relax.

3. Don’t compare your wedding to everyone else’s

Social media is full of beautiful weddings, but remember that you’re seeing carefully selected moments, not the full picture. Your wedding doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s to be wonderful.

Focus on what feels right for you as a couple and what you can comfortably afford.

4. Ask for help

Your partner, bridesmaids, family and friends may be delighted to help with suitable tasks. You don’t need to do everything yourself.

Most importantly, try to enjoy the engagement itself. This is a special chapter of your story, not simply a countdown to the wedding day.

Finding Thoughtful Bridal Party Gifts Without the Stress

Your bridal party is there to support you, celebrate with you and hopefully keep you smiling throughout the wedding journey. Asking someone to be your bridesmaid or Maid of Honour is a lovely moment, and thanking them for being part of your day is just as special.

But if you’re searching for bridal party gifts, you might be wondering what to choose.

My favourite approach is to think about the person receiving the gift rather than simply buying something because it has “bridesmaid” written on it.

Consider:

  • Bridesmaid proposal gifts: A thoughtful way to ask your favourite people to stand beside you on your wedding day.
  • Personalised gifts: Adding a name or a meaningful message can make a gift feel more personal.
  • Thank-you gifts: A little something to show your appreciation for the time, effort and support your bridal party has given you.
  • Keepsakes: Something they can keep long after the celebrations have ended.

At My Wedding Shop, I love helping brides find thoughtful gifts for those important bridal moments. From bridesmaid proposal boxes to personalised gifts and little bridal treats, the aim is to help you make the people you love feel special.

You don’t have to spend a fortune to show someone how much they mean to you. A thoughtful gift, chosen with them in mind, can be just as meaningful as something extravagant.

Remember to Enjoy Your Wedding Journey

It’s easy to get caught up in the to-do lists, decisions and deadlines. Before you know it, you can find yourself thinking more about the wedding than enjoying the experience of being engaged.

So here’s your reminder: you don’t have to plan the perfect wedding. You just have to plan a wedding that feels right for you.

Celebrate the little milestones. Enjoy choosing the people who’ll stand beside you. Take photos along the way. Have fun trying ideas together, and don’t be afraid to change your mind.

Some things will go exactly as planned, and others might take a little longer. That’s okay!

My goal at My Wedding Shop is to help you feel calm, organised and excited from the moment you say “yes” until the moment you say “I do”.

You can take things one step at a time, and I’ll be cheering you on along the way.

Happy wedding planning!

Love,
